Volunteers for the American Heart Association are celebrating American Heart Month by knitting red hats for all babies born in February at participating local hospitals. We’re raising awareness of heart disease - the number one killer of Americans, and congenital heart defects - the most common type of birth defect in the country.
Volunteers Needed!
If you knit or crochet and would like to participate in the Little Hats, Big HeartsTM project, please let us know. We gratefully accept both baby hats and donations of red yarn.
Sample patterns for baby hats can be found here:
We work with both the Mother-Baby unit and Neonatal Intensive Care unit in our local hospitals, so we need hats in both newborn and preemie sizes.
Yarn specifics:
--red
--cotton or acrylic
--medium to heavy weight
--machine washable and dryable
We also recommend simple hat patterns. While we love bows and buttons, they can come off the hats and be dangerous for the little ones - please do not include these types of items on the hats.
Yarn donations are welcome too.
